Log Book: St. Augustine - November 2003

Following day we went back to town searching out a place we could buy second hand charts for the Bahamas. We found sailors exchange type of establishment and couple of other sailors loitering at the door waiting for the store to open. We didn’t actually buy anything but as it turns out St. Augustine was in preparations for some festivities in a local park. The band was polishing their trumpets and a school choir was practicing in a gazebo. Lots of suites and ties with the air of city officials unaccustomed to be outside were mingling all around. I asked one of the police what was up, and as it turns out no one else, but Florida's governor, Jeb Bush was coming to town. Jeb Bush was also the younger brother of the president and he had some political act at works in St. Augustine. It was a federal government fare and we enjoyed watching some of the US politics live in action, chatting to eager activists trying to register our vote. Federal branches of commerce, prison and what else were setting up exhibits informing St. Augustine public about the federal programs. The city even hired a catering company feeding constituency (and couple of boaters) with a free lunch. It was great. The band played few numbers, few speeches went off the platform and governor walked down into the crowd to pump some hands. Great move Jeb! The lunch was delicious and speeches short. Next elections shan’t be a problem.
