Log Book: Altamaha River, GA - October 2003

Georgia stretch of ICW is very beautiful and very remote and undeveloped. You’ll love the days of not seeing a single town and you’ll hate the days of not seeing a single town. I think I liked it more than my friend Johannes, who in never ending pursuit of stimulus is always somewhat restless. I definitely liked that it was blowing nice and I had lots of fun sailing the obstacle course between different markers, river bends on different point of sail every minute. It reminded me of skiing the gates.
We end up taking a detour to go up some river to gas-up. It took us lot longer than we would hope, but after couple of hours of lazy sailing we saw the marina we were looking for. We talked to few people there including one fellow, who upon hearing that we are considering taking a trip to Cuba advised us to stock up on black market with firearms. He told us many awful pirate stories. His boat’s arsenal, besides regular seven hand guns featured nothing less but a machine gun. One question I failed to ask was how do you fire seven weapons at the same time and not taking any beating yourself, but I guess I was hoping I’ll never have regrets for sailing with nothing but a flare gun. I’ll be curious to hear some of your comments about that as well. Go to our forum and put in your five cents. We didn’t know what to expect in Cuba, though. It could be risky place to sail around and in a way I did appreciate to have someone advising some caution about the personal safety. Just to let you know we have not pursued any shady arms dealer, hoping our low budged boat would not be much of a target.
